About this Image
Description

Alfred Francis Hill (1870 – 1960) was a violinist and pioneering New Zealand composer who was one of the first writers of formal music to meld elements of Maori music into European composition. He established the first professional orchestra in New Zealand and later moved to Sydney where his interest in Aboriginal music led to correspondingly similar musical influences in his compositions. He was the son of Charles Hill who established the firm of Hills Hats in Wellington in 1875.

See the link to the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography for further information.
