Looking east down Courtenay Place while workers place new dual tramlines for the introduction of the electric tram by the Wellington City Corporation. Based on the timeline of electric tram routes and visible signage on the buildings it is estimated this photograph was taken between late 1903 and early 1904.
The wooden building on the far right is His Majesty's Theatre, which had recently had a name change from "Choral Hall" following John Fuller's lease of the space. A painted sign can be seen outside advertising "Fuller's Pantomime, Robinson Crusoe, Boxing Night".
A horse-drawn cart on the left bears the name Sinclair & Co, and likely belongs to the shop it is stationed in front of; a coal and produce store owned by a Mrs. M. Sinclair.
