"Unemployed" ships anchored in Wellington Harbour during a maritime strike in 1913. The strike became part of the nationwide "Great Strike" that carried into 1914, seriously halting New Zealand's trade and economy.
This photograph was taken on the 5th of November, the same day that the violent "Battle of Featherston Street" took place between strike supporters and mounted special constables. The following day these ships were able to dock at wharves serviced by volunteer free labourers, known to the strikers as 'scabs'.
