An early photograph of Abel Smith Street looking towards Mt Victoria. A wooden footpath runs up the left side of the street; an entranceway in the lower-left of the image is likely to be a side street noted in Thomas Ward's 1892 map simply as "The Avenue" (now known as Inverlochy Place).
A horse-drawn cart and a gas lamp are on the opposite side of the street.
While it is assumed that the current building at 117 Abel Smith Street was not built until 1910, a lack of Council permits suggest that it was actually built much earlier, and could be the two-storey home with curved windows, visible behind the gas lamp.
