The home of Herbert Rawson at his large property in Seatoun.
Rawson was a well-known Wellington dentist and businessman who owned substantial property in Seatoun. Originally run as dairy farms, the sections were gradually developed including the area around Ludlam and Inglis Streets and known as the 'home block'. On these sites Rawson's own residence was built as well as other high-quality builds that acted as 'show homes' for the development.
Herbert Rawson's personal property included extensive grounds covering the block bordering Ludlum Street, Inglis Street, Burnham Street and Falkirk Avenue. This photograph in 1907 shows the gardens as established but incomplete. By 1908 Rawson had purchased the now heritage-listed gazebo that was later moved offsite to Masterton.
Following Rawson's death in 1926 this property was subdivided into smaller lots and a cul-de-sac named 'Rawson Place' built through it. The primary residence (which had been enlarged by this time) was cut into two parts which were sold separately on adjacent lots. The two halves were renovated themselves though are still standing at 7 and 9 Burnham Street.
