The staff accomodation camp established by the Ministry of Works at the western portal of the Remutaka Tunnel. In addition to housing for the workers, the camp also had a kitchen, ablutions block, power house, and mechanical and sawyer's workshops.

Married men were given priority for the larger timber cottages shown in the foreground here. Single men were generally assigned to a 'rail hut', a standalone 10 x 8 ft. room furnished with a bed, desk and wood-powered stove for warmth. 

In 1955 the Remutaka Deviation project including the camp were handed over to the New Zealand Railways Department. Rail workers then stayed at the camp for some months while railway lines were laid through both the Remutaka and Maoribank tunnels.

'Remutaka' was spelled as 'Rimutaka' at the time of these works. The western portal camp was always referred to as 'Mangaroa', though the area is now known as Maymorn.
