James and Alice Bourke (seated) surrounded by family. Its likely that the children pictured are three of the couple's four sons.
The Bourkes are noted for their early residence in Kilbirnie. They purchased land from James Coutts Crawford in what was soon called 'Kilbirnie South' and J. Bourke became involved in local politics including being an original member of the Melrose Borough Council. They are acknowledged in the naming of Bourke Street. Further information about the family has been recorded in the book St. Patrick's Parish Jubilee 1919 - 1969.
This print is a copy only of the original; it appears to have been taken from a larger photograph which would have featured more family members.
