Appleton Park

About this Image

Description

The newly-landscaped Appleton Park on the corner of Birdwood Street and Chaytor Street in Karori.

The site had previously been a deep valley which was donated to the Wellington City Corporation by Thomas Ward in 1920. The 'pit' was used as a general rubbish tip from 1929 until 1940, when most tipping ceased and the fill was left to settle. Soil was then added to bring the grounds to road level and responsibility of the new "Chaytor Street Reserve" (later named Appleton Park) was transferred to the WCC Reserves Department in 1945.
