The Finest Villa Residential Site in the Hutt [McNab's Gardens, Woburn]

A bill advertising sections subdivided from a large property formerly known as McNab's Gardens (later renamed Bellevue Gardens). Alfred Ludlam (1817-1877) established the first gardens on this site in the 1840’s. Then known as  ‘Newry’, the gardens acquired a national reputation for their beauty.  Following Ludnam’s death, the gardens were bought by James McNab, a Wellington-based gardener. He turned the gardens into a public attraction and charged a modest entry fee. The gardens passed to the Ros family in 1896 who sub-divided the lower part of the estate to create what is now Nikau Grove (shown here as Nikau Ave) and Wai-iti Crescent. In 1900 the remaining gardens were sold to Arthur Lodder and John Orr who turned the original house into a hotel and conducted this subdivision. Attempts to further subdivide the property was met by local resistance but after Lodder’s death in 1911, the estate was managed by the Public Trustee until another subdivision took place in 1922.
