St. Peter's Mission, Taranaki St, Wellington : History of its Inception and Development, 1904 - 1921

St Peter's Mission began in 1904 as part of the St Peter's parish, the church of which was (and continues to be) located on the corner of Willis Street and Ghuznee Street. The Mission provided a variety of social and charitable services to the residents of Te Aro during a time before the widespread introduction of the welfare state and when the area was often blighted with social problems associated with poverty, alcoholism and over-crowded housing.
