Mortuary Chapel, Bolton Street Cemetery

St. Paul's Mortuary Chapel within the Bolton Street Cemetery. 

The small building was erected in 1866 using parts of the original St. Paul's Church which once sat on Museum Street (now within Parliament Grounds). This older church was the first to be built in Wellington, having opened for services in 1844. 

The Chapel was regularly used for funeral services for some decades until the 1890s when Karori Cemetery took over the responsibility for most burials. It was largely maintained however two small fires in the 1960s combined with rotting timbers meant that restoration became unfeasible; it was demolished in 1969 in preparation for the Urban Motorway construction.
