TitleViews of Featherston Military CampAuthor/ContributorBenjamin MurgatroydDate Published[1917]Place of publicationPalmerston NorthDescription
Featherston Military Camp was the largest training camp in New Zealand during World War I. Located about 1 mile east of the township, up to 9000 soldiers could be accommodated at once and eventually nearly 60,000 men were trained there. After the war concluded it was used as a military storage facility until 1926 when a large section of the camp was demolished. However, a smaller section of the camp was re-commissioned during World War II as a Prisoner of War facility for Japanese soldiers.
This booklet contains several wide-format panoramic photographs which help give an indication of just how large the camp was. We suggest clicking on the "Zoom to 100%" button above the magnifying glass icon on the vertical toolbar to the left of the viewing pane to view these images clearly.
