W5 magazine was produced by Platform Publishing Ltd, a company established in 1984 by Geoff Norman and Warwick Terry. Inspired by similar 'city' magazines such as Auckland's Metro, W5 sought to provide Wellingtonians with up-to-date information about what was happening in the greater region, as well as long-form feature articles and interviews, elements which were generally absent in local 'freebie' community newspapers. Edited by the journalist, writer and historian David McGill, W5 ran to 10 issues. Though notable for the high standard of its journalism, its modest $1 cover price combined with advertising revenue was not enough to cover costs and its final issue was printed in mid-July 1984, just days before the 1984 snap-election.
