Alan Edward Mulgan (1881–1962) was a notable New Zealand journalist, writer and broadcaster. He was born in Katikati in Bay of Plenty but moved to Auckland in 1890 where he completed his schooling. After failing to gain a university scholarship in 1900 he began working for the Auckland Star, beginning a career in journalism which would influence the rest of his life. After working for a number of newspapers, in 1924 he became the foundation lecturer in journalism at Auckland University. He continued in this role until 1935 when he resigned to take up a senior position with the NZ Broadcasting Board (eventually to become Radio New Zealand). He retired in 1946 but continued to write regular feature articles for the Dominion. Mulgan was a prolific writer of books and was active in PEN (the NZ Society of Authors). He died in Lower Hutt in August 1962 aged 81 and is buried at Karori Cemetery. This print is one of two S. P. Andrew portraits which were not included in the main set gifted by the photographer to the Wellington Public Library in 1936 but has been included in this series for consistency.
