Will Lawson

Will Lawson (1876 - 1957) was born in Durham, England, but moved with his family to Australia at the age of 9. After a short period living in Brisbane, the family moved again to come and live in Wellington. He completed an education in Wellington, started working as an insurance clerk and began writing poems for the Australian magazine The Bulletin. He published three collections of poetry before leaving Wellington to return to Australia in 1912 where he settled in Sydney and began working as a journalist and writing as a 'bush poet' and novelist. Today he is generally regarded as being an Australian writer and is closely associated with the emerging vernacular arts and literature scene which flourished in Sydney during the 1930s & 40s.
