The Nga Tupuna project was initiated by Wellington City Libraries working in collaboration with the Wellington Tenths Trust. While the history of Māori ownership of land around the Wellington area was being researched as part of various Treaty of Waitangi claims, it was felt that not enough emphasis was being given to the biographies of the individuals being named in those claims. This document, the first of four volumes of collected biographies, gives an overview of the individuals, hapu and iwi who migrated to Te Whanganui-a-Tara from the Taranaki rohe during the 1820 - 1840 period. Now out of print, Wellington City Libraries wishes to thank and acknowledge the Wellington Tenth's Trust for allowing this volume to be digitised on our Recollect platform.

Errata

A number of corrections have been made and errors identified since Nga Tupuna Vol 1 was published in 2001.

p. 15  Mohi Ngaponga's wife Hera Piko was the sister of Hone and Wereta Te Matoha

p. 25  "Deeds of Cessation" should read "Deeds of Cession"

p. 29  St Paul’s Church did not have cathedral status at the time

p. 33.  Te Puoho-o-te-rangi was the brother of Te Kaeaea rather than simply a "close relation"

The name of Colonel McCleverty was accidently miss-spelt throughout as "McLeverty"
