Lions and Lambs of Wellington: well known citizens in caricature by Alan Reeve

Alan Llewellyn Reeve was born in the Hutt Valley in 1910. He moved to Wellington City as a young man where he emerged suddenly into public consciousness as a formidable cartoonist with this published collection of caricatures when he was aged only 22. Within the volume he gently lampoons nearly 250 well known Wellingtonians from the early 1930s, drawn from the elite of business, politics, sport, religion, the arts, education and academia. He received many private commissions and from 1934 traveled widely, working as a cartoonist and journalist in Australia, Europe and Canada. His cartoons were also published in a selection of American magazines including Fortune, Town and Country and Vogue. The quality of his work was noted by the famous fellow-New Zealand born cartoonist Sir David Low who acquired a number of Reeve cartoons for his own collection.

Alan Reeve died outside of New Zealand (possibly Australia) in 1962 at the age of 52.
