The Cuba Street Memories Project
The Cuba Street Memories Project was the first collaborative and interactive website of Wellington City Libraries. It was conceived in 2008 when the library decided to investigate the creation of a site where members of the local community could contribute their own memories and experiences. After looking at several potential topics, Cuba Street was chosen on the basis that it well known heritage area with a diverse range of activity and was much loved by generations of Wellingtonians. Looking around the world for a suitable platform, we were surprised and delighted to find that a local product call Kete fitted our requirements perfectly. This was an open-source digital-library platform developed by the Wellington-based web design company Katipo Communications Ltd working in collaboration with the Horowhenua Library Trust. Seeded with material sourced from the Wellington Central Library's own collection and material from the Wellington City Archives, the Cuba Street Memories Project was launched in February 2009 at the Cuba Street Carnival.
In 2020, with 'Kete' offering only a limited number of features by current standards, it was decided to close the Cuba Street Memories Project in its original form and transfer its contents here to our principal online heritage platform Wellington City Recollect. You are welcome to continue to comment and to tell us your memories of Wellington's most vibrant and best loved inner-city streets. Just click on "Login" in the top-right corner (where you can also create an account if you don't already have one) enter your user-name and password and then click on the "Recollections" button which accompanies each page to contribute your memories.
