The Māori Land Court (originally called the Native Land Court) was established in 1865 as a legal means to award land titles recognisible under English law to traditionally held blocks of Māori land. Individuals who were claiming ownership had to provide evidence (generally given as oral testimony) about their hapū, their ancestry, their past history of defending their land against outsiders, and their use and occupation of kāinga, pā and cultivations in the area. This makes the minute books of the Land Court an extraordinarily useful resource for tracing Māori whakapapa (genealogy). For the first time, the minute book relating to the greater Wellington district has been digitised and uploaded onto this Recollect platform.

The English translations given here were originally made by  Angela Ballara in 1998 as part of the Treaty of Waitangi claim process of Te Atiawa / Wellington Tenth's Trust (Wai 145). Note that all text appearing in square brackets has been provided by the translator to give greater detail and to explain anomalies which may exist in the oral testimonies.
