Constructed over a four-year period, when the Wellington Railway Station opened in 1937 it was the largest building in New Zealand and was said to be one of the most modern railway stations in the world. Printed one year after it opened, this souvenir booklet published by the Railways Department shows off the Wellington Railway Station in all of its brand-new glory. At a time when major railways stations filled a similar role that large airports do today, all of the major public amenities that a weary traveller might need are featured, including restaurants, waiting rooms, a children's creche & nursery, and even a "men's hairdressing saloon".
