A general letter of family news to Hadfield's sister, Octavia which covers similar ground to the letter written to his brother Charles on the same day (50008-31-6). Kate's sister has died in Pahia. Their nephew Willie is staying with them. Their eldest son Henry is doing better at school ('Crofton' in Ngaio). Their daughter Annie is learning a little French from Octavius but he wishes that more teachers of 'modern' languages were available though all the Hadfield children are fluent in Maori and pick it up easily.
