Wellington Athenaeum and Mechanic's Institute

Wellington Athenaeum and Mechanic's Institute at their first permanent building on Lambton Quay. It provided a prototype public library service on a subscription basis from its establishment in 1850 until it closed c. 1888. The end of the institution provided the impetus  for the Wellington City Council to purchase the Athenaeum's book collection and to establish the Wellington Public Library.
