In this remarkable work of research dating from 1968, Joan Stevens (later to be appointed Professor of English Literature at Victoria University) uncovers the history of New Zealand's first library which was established in Wellington at the northern end of Lambton Quay in 1842. This institution was the predecessor of Wellington City Libraries and several books from this first library remain in the current library's Rare Book collection.
The article details the story of the institution's first librarian, Dr Frederick Knox who was connected via his brother to the infamous 1828 'Burke and Hare' serial murders in Edinburgh. He later went on to become one of NZ's first coroners while his daughter Mary Knox married William Waring Taylor, the younger brother of the Wellington businesswoman Mary Taylor who was the close friend and confidant of the novelist Charlotte Bronte.
