Though not a church in the strictest sense, this silver jubilee history of the Futuna Retreat has been included within this collection for consistency and because of the significance of the chapel which is now regarded as one of the most significant works of modern vernacular architecture in New Zealand. In 2000, the Marist Brothers made the decision to close the retreat. The original main house which once belonged to Sidney Kirkcaldie (co-founder of the department store Kirkcaldie & Stains) was demolished and the site was developed as a housing estate called Futuna Close. The chapel was deconsecrated and is now owned and managed by a charitable trust. See the link below for further information.
