Government Life Insurance Building site

The site of the Government Life Insurance building which has just been demolished.  It was constructed in 1892 - 1893 but due to its design and the nature of the reclaimed land on which it was constructed, the building was found to be particularly vulnerable to earthquakes and it sustained minor damage on multiple occasions. A decision was made to demolish the building shortly after the Napier Earthquake of February 1931.  It was replaced with a new building for the same institution (later known as the Tower Building).
