TitleThe Poles in Wellington, New Zealand : a Phenomenological Study (Victoria University College, Publications in Psychology, No. 5)Author/ContributorWillie Mae GillisPublisherVictoria UniversityDate Published1954Place of publicationWellingtonDescription
The arrival in Wellington of over 800 Poles in late 1944 was the first time that New Zealand had accepted a significant number of refugees from a single ethnic group en masse. Based on the author's M.A. thesis, this summary report which was published a decade after their arrival was one of the first significant studies to investigate how a refugee group was settling into New Zealand. It looked at how trauma experienced before arrival could impact the process of assimilation as well as the animosity from the dominant Anglo-Saxon population which was often projected towards 'non-British' migrants.
