The remains of the former South Karori School photographed about 20 - 30 years after its closure. This 'side school' opened c. 1885 and was run under the administration of Karori School (aka "Karori Main") in Donald Street. It was closed by the Wellington Board of Education in 1908 due to falling rolls and the extension of the tramline to the end of Karori Road which made access to Karori School (later renamed Karori Normal School) easier. Pupils living at the far end of Karori continued to attend the main school until Karori West [Normal] School opened in 1932.
The school was located on the eastern side of South Karori Road, likely close to the present-day intersection with the southern extension of Hazelwood Avenue.
