The Thorndon Baths was a salt-water unheated swimming pool located off Thorndon Quay. In front of the baths can be seen 'the Esplanade'; a wide walking path that stretched the length of the quay and was popular for 'promenades' (i.e. formal walks). The swimming pool was demolished and the esplanade was to disappear following further land reclamation in the 1920s to expand the rail yards and extend port facilities by creating Aotea Quay. The current Thorndon Pool in Murphy Street was constructed to replace the Thorndon Baths following their demolition.
