Royalty in New Zealand: Official Pictorial Souvenir of the visit of T.R.H. The Duke & Duchess of York, 1927

This booklet was produced by the New Zealand Government shortly after the 1927 visit of their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of York.

The pair visited New Zealand via the HMS Renown, touring both the North and South Islands for a total of four weeks. 

At the time the Duke was second in line to the throne behind his brother, Edward the Prince of Wales, though he would eventually take the throne with his wife as King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (later known as the Queen Mother) following his brother's abdication in 1936.

The visit had a special significance for Wellington which continues to this day. As a 'gift' to the royal couple, the businessman and property developer James Stellin was asked (and he readily agreed) to name the new suburb he was creating at the southern end of the Miramar Peninsula after the Duchess. She had been known (before marriage) as Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, that being the family name of her father, the Earl of Strathmore. Thus the suburb which bears that name and many of its first streets (Kinghorne St, Bentinck Ave, Glamis St, Bowes Cres, Lyons Cres and several others) were named in honour of her family, their estate and the surrounding area in the county of Angus in Scotland.
