The Demonstration House was an experimental home developed and built in Makara Road in Karori West over 1948-49 by architecture students associated with the Wellington based collective and lobby group The Architectural Centre Inc. It used modernist design principles to create a house that worked with (rather than fighting against) the topography on which it was sited as well as facing the sun (rather than the street) and featured floor-to-ceiling windows and in-built cabinetry and furniture. The house received a lot of attention from the public and a model was displayed at the central library.
It also featured in an episode of the New Zealand cinema newsreel, Weekly Review which can be viewed online here.
