The lyrics to a satirical song written by Peter Harcourt (1923 - 1995) and performed by him at the comedy revue, One for the Road staged by the Wellington Repertory Theatre from 4th to 14th July 1959. The tune used was likely Im tiefen Keller ('In Cellar Cool'), a traditional German drinking song originally written by Ludwig Fischer. The song was performed in response to a series of police raids which took place the previous month on Wellington restaurants who were allowing customers to drink wine with their meals which was illegal at the time. It points out the absurdities and contradictions that existed in New Zealand's liquor laws. You can read more about this event here.
