TitleRestaurateurs may forbid patrons to bring wine with themNewspaper title[The Evening Post]Date June 1959Description
An article covering a meeting of various restaurateurs impacted by a mass police raid searching for alcohol. The sale of alcohol in restaurants was at the time illegal with no means by which they could obtain a liquor on-licence. Patrons bringing in their own alcohol to consume was also illegal but this was a rule that was often ignored. One result of these raids and the subsequent fall-out was the creation of a proper 'B.Y.O' license which provided a legal avenue for patrons to bring in their own alcohol and for restaurants to charge a 'corkage' fee to cover the costs of licensing and the provision of glassware.
