RAD ('Radio Active Digest') was a late-1980s bi-monthly magazine which promoted Wellington's main alternative radio station, Radio Active. Though closely associated with the then-VUWSA owned station, the magazine was published by a separate company, Cadre Communications Ltd headed by Active stalwarts, Mark Cubey and Michael Lockhart. The magazine offered music & theatre reviews, band interviews, news about the station and insights into Wellington's alternative culture. More practical advice was also included such as how to make an inexpensive FM aerial to improve radio reception and explanations about new emerging technologies such as MIDI. After ceasing publication in mid-1990, the design and theme of RAD was picked up by the similarly focused magazine, Emit. In 1991 the editors of the two magazines teamed up to create Scope.
