Lambton Harbour: A Place for People

A brief information booklet produced by Lambton Harbour Management in order to promote a new design concept for the Wellington Waterfront. This scheme titled the 'Lambton Harbour Development Project' arose as a joint venture between the Wellington Harbour Board and Wellington City Council shortly before the Harbour Board was dissolved. It aimed to pedestrianise the inner-harbour waterfront area by pivoting away from its use as an industrial port as many of its facilities had become obsolete following the introduction of containerised shipping in the 1970s.

This early concept involved a new National Museum site (later to see fruition as Te Papa), a covered pedestrian link between Wellington Railway Station and the Waterfront, as well as a developed Queen's Wharf with a proposed 31-storey 'Landmark Tower'. The tower concept was deemed to no longer viable as a project following the share market 'crash' of 1987.
