WELLINGTON’S MAORI HISTORY
NGA KORERO MUA O TE UPOKO O TE IKA

Prehistory is the study of human activities[...]y period of contact with Europeans.

The setting

Te Upoko o Te Ika (the head of Mau’s fish) must be
seen as on[...]awa Moana (Cook Strait). The high country from
Te Rawhiti to the Tararua and Rimutaka ranges lay in[...]ast (protected from prevailing
north-west winds), Te Whanganui a Tara (Wellington
Harbour), Pauatahanu[...]ions and are not in
general use today

Makara, Te Ika a Maru, Te Motu Kairangi (the
Miramar peninsula), and[...]
[...]al occupants were descendants
of Tara, after whom Te Whanganui a Tara is named.
The Ngai.Tara (the tri[...]t principal chief of Ngai Tara. His daughter,
Moe-te-Ao, married the leader of Ngati Ira, Whaka-

last century.

As the stormy[...]

sandy soils of Te Motu Kairangi (Miramar peninsula),
and small area[...]d banks of defensive pa, such as those at
Makara, Te Ika a Maru, or near Te Au-a-Tane (the
Wellington Harbour entrance), was[...]debt to the offended.

The total population of Te Whanganui a Tara was
probably no more than severa[...]have come from the
South Island.

In this period, Te Upoko o Te Ika was part of a mesh of
related tribes — Rang[...]gai Tahu, and
later Ngati Kahungunu — including Te Wai Pounamu
(the South Island). Then as now, the[...]st would be important in trade between
Ngai Tahu, Te Atiawa, Tuwharetoa and other more
populous tribes[...]s future
was being foreshadowed for the people of Te Upoko o
Te Ika.

cleared Te Whanganui a Tara of its older population,
the sur[...]d by Ngati
Toa coming into the Porirua aréa, and Te Atiawa into
Te Whanganui a Tara. Te Rauparaha and Te Rangi-
haeata were famous chiefs of Ngati Toa who[...]emata, and
Pauatahanui. The most famous chiefs of Te Atiawa
were Te Wharepouri and Te Puni who lived on the
western shore of the harbour and in the Hutt. Most of
the place names of Te Whanganui a Tara still derive
from the earlier oc[...]as opposed to trans-
ient whaling stations. Some Te Atiawa, originally from
Taranaki, returned there[...]ined are the mana whenua (acknowledged owners)
of Te Whanganui a Tara. The period is beyond the
