G. H. Scholefield

 Guy Hardy Scholefield (1877 – 1963) was a notable historian, journalist, librarian / archivist and biographer. Born in Dunedin, he came to live in Wellington in 1899 to work for the Liberal Party-orientated newspaper, The New Zealand Times. He joined the Parliamentary Press Gallery in 1901 and after a short period in Christchurch attending Canterbury College to complete his tertiary education (later Canterbury University), he returned to become Chief of Staff  at the New Zealand Times. The writer of a number of historical works and eventually becoming the chief Parliamentary Librarian, he is best known for his series of New Zealand Who's who books and the Dictionary of National Biography. He is particularly remembered here at Wellington City Libraries for being the principal organiser of what became known as the Scholefield Papers, a massive compilation of family trees of early NZ settler families created around the time of the 1940 centennial celebrations. The papers were deposited at the Central Library and an index to them was created by the Wellington Branch of the NZ Society of Genealogists.
