TitleSketches of old New Zealand : Maori biographies compiled by James Cowan, descriptive catalogue of Maori portraits by Herr G. LindauerAuthor/ContributorJames CowanPublisherThe Brett Printing and Publishing CompanyDate Published1901Place of publicationAucklandDescription
This collection of Māori biographies was used as a catalogue to accompany the 'permanent' exhibition of Gottfried Lindauer paintings collected by Henry Edward Partridge (1848–1931). Partridge was one of Lindauer's earliest clients and the two maintained a close personal and business relationship for nearly 40 years. Over 70 works were purchased and these were placed on display in a private gallery which was open to the public above the tobacconist shop which Partridge owned in Queen Street, Auckland. In 1915 Partridge gifted his entire collection to the Auckland Art Gallery.
James Cowan was one of New Zealand's most popular writers of the first half of the 20th Century. It should be noted that his biographies reflect the colonial era in which they were written and the text should be read in that context. You can read more about Cowan and view a portrait held within our collection here.
