TitleWellington in Verse and PictureAuthor/ContributorPat Lawlor (1893-1979)PublisherFerguson & Osborn LtdDate Published1939Place of publicationWellingtonDescription
This selection of poems and photographs celebrating Wellington were selected by the notable Wellington journalist and historian, Pat Lawlor. Being published just before the 'literary nationalist' poets began to emerge (aka 'the Caxton generation'), most of the poems are written in the post-Romantic style which was the most popular form of verse in New Zealand in the first half of the 20th century. Several of the poets included were photographed by S.P Andrew and their portraits can be viewed here.
The poem Wellington by David McKee Wright became well known to generations of Wellingtonians as it was one of a series that was carefully painted onto an interior door of a Wellington tram.
A second edition of this book with a slightly different selection of poems and photographs was published in 1955 and this can be viewed here.
