One of the oldest surviving incorporated institutions in the capital city, the Wellington Club has been operating since the mid-1850s with its roots going back to 1841. This early history of the club was published in 1960, shortly before the final route of the Wellington Urban Motorway was determined that would eventually result in the club's grand Victorian building being demolished and its site reduced in area by a third. Though no author's name is printed, this work was attributed to John Cruickshank Morrison by the historian & chief Alexander Turnbull Librarian, Austin Bagnall.
