Add20th Feb 2024 12:26PMThe following additional information was received from Judy Siers who was married to the-late James Siers and co-founder of the publishing firm, Millwood Press.
"I am pleased to have the opportunity for this book to be in circulation through Wellington City Libraries' Recollect page and acknowledge Gábor Tóth's interest in this and in proceeding with its digitisation.
It is one of mine and Jim's favourite titles of our large Millwood catalogue and Jim had a fabulous time photographing the city.
The front cover choice was his; deliberately, he wanted to record his memory of the first glimpse of his new home when he was just a child.
When the Polish children arrived in the harbour in 1944 at night, the boat anchored and waited for the next day before berthing. When the children ran on deck, on a sunny day, in the morning, they were overwhelmed with what they saw!
On the occasion of this publication Jim wanted to present Wellington with its houses on the hills as remembered. The children were awe-struck - how come the houses didn't fall off!
They had not seen such a green landscape, with hills and houses on them, in their lifetime. It felt scary!"
